Cherrypal's Cheap Netbook for 99USD

Cherrypal Africa Cheap Netbook

Best Netbooks - Cherrypal's Cheap Netbook for under $100

Cherrypal Inc. has just announced the launch of its netbook which it has named Africa. It may not be one of the best netbooks around but it certainly is good value for money and one of the cheapest netbooks currently available under $100. It is not, however, the absolute cheapest netbook available, that honor goes to the Menq EasyPC E790 at just S80 - for more information on the Menq see cheap netbook for under $100.

The Cherrypal Africa has a very small screen measuring just 7 inches (diagonally) a 400 MHz processor with 256 GB RAM, 2 GB flash memory and runs under Linux or Windows CE operating systems. It is also said to be environmentally-friendly, consuming the least amount of power possible and using fewer parts than netbooks from other manufacturers. The lithium battery (included) will give you four hours use.

According to Cherrypal the Africa is a mini netbook computer named after the company's initiative in Ghana aimed at building communities. "The company ... also relies on wind energy to power its Web site." So if saving the planet is an issue for you but you still want to access the Internet then the Cherrypal Africa could be what you are looking for.

The Menq EasyPC E790 also has a 7" screen but only half the memory, neither of these would claim to be one of the best netbooks money can buy but at under $100 they will certainly be attractive to a lot of people.

Best Netbooks Samsung N310

In the market for a netbook? Then why not go for one of the best netbooks currently available - the Samsung N310 Not only is it powerful for a netbook they also went to the trouble of getting Japanese artists Naoto Fukasawa to design it - now that's got to be worth something ! In their words the Samsung N310Best NEtbooks Samsung N310 "features smoothly rounded edges that resemble a pebble that's been worn down by wind and waterfall" that sounds like sort of thing a Japanese designer would say. It comes in sunset orange, midnight blue, mint blue. The keyboard and screen bezel are however jet black which creates a snazzy eye-popping color scheme.

The rocker-bar style mouse is not so hot for a netbook that would like to be one of the best netbooks on the market, but we would have preferred separate left and right buttons.

The keys on the flat-topped keyboard that are similar to a Sony Vaio. Typing is comfortable, and important keys are pretty large.

The screeen is 10.1" LED with a 1,024x600 resolution, which is pretty standard for netbooks, although some netbooks often have 1,366x768 screens, particularly the more expensive ones.

Best Netbooks | Asus Eee PC T91MT

Looking for a netbook computer for Christmas ? ASUS has launched the Eee PC T91MT, the smallest convertible netbook with a multi-touch screen that supports Windows 7 Multi-Touch.

Best Netbooks - Asus Eee PC T91MT Multi-Touch

Asus Eee PC T91MT Netbook
It is aimed at students and professionals who have to take notes or make one-to-one presentations, the Eee PC T91MT is one of the slimmest and best netbooks available with Windows 7 Home Premium (do not get Windows 7 Starter Version by the way you will only regret it) - it is just 1" thick and weighs less than 1 kg -- it reproduces handwriting and lets you to perform tasks intuitively using just your fingers (as oppose dto some netbooks which require you to use your toes too?).

The multi-touch capabilities of the Asus Eee PC T91MT netbook are enhanced by a comprehensive suite of preinstalled software optimised for touch. The Eee PC T91MT is designed for people on the move and has a shockproof 32GB Solid State Drive and an additional 500GB of online WebStorage.

One more reason why it is one of the best netbooks around is that it is dual purpose, in tablet form it can be used as an e-reader, in netbook mode it is a great tool for discussions, as the screen swivels for use by more than one person, and it can also accept touch input from more than one person.

The Eee PC T91MT netbook supports Windows 7 Multi-Touch gestures, so that almost every task can be carried out just by tapping, dragging, pinching or flicking. Games become much more interactive and documents can be flipped through with fingers as if they were real books.

Users can also carry out a whole host of tasks with their fingertips, such as editing photos using FotoFun, taking notes and writing handwritten reminders with Memos.

The Eee PC T91MT has a 8.9" multi-touch screen that allows drawing on its 8.9-inch WSVGA LCD panel with 1024 X 600 resolutions. It features basic wireless LAN 802.11b/g/n for easy network connectivity, and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR wireless technologies. It also has a 0.3 megapixel built-in camera module, USB 2.0 host and Ethernet ports, two USB ports, stereo speakers, built in Digital Array Mic Interface, a D-sub 15-pin connector for an external monitor and a VGA Connector.

One LAN RJ-45 port, two audio jacks and an MMC/SD (SDHC) card reader. Battery life is up to 5 hours on the power of the Li-polymer battery. For a video presentation of the Asus Tablet Netbook see Asus T91 Netbook

The retail price of the Eee PC T91MT netbook is currently $530, not cheap but it does have some exciting features and is preloaded with Windows 7 making it one of the best netbooks available, the only problem is it may prove hard to actually get hold of one. Alternative is the Acer Ferrari Laptop

Best Netbooks Window 7 Home Premium

Best NetbooksAccording to Retrovo, 61% of netbook users do not like the new Windows 7 starter edition. So if you have gone out of your way to carefully choose one of the best netbooks around - don't put Windows 7 Starter Edition on it.

Best Netbooks - Windows 7 Any Good?

The reason being that there are limitations on Windows 7 starter edition that weren't there with Windows XP, which Microsoft has not tried to hide, but people don't seem to take any notice.

If you want Windows 7 on a netbook then you need to get the Windows 7 Home Premium version.

Windows makes its software to make money not to make people happy, but customers really should check things out before handing over their hard-earned cash. The message is clear, get Windows Home Premium for your netbook !

There are alternatives to Windows of course, one of which is Linux, and some reports are saying that Linux could get over 30% of the netbook market share this year alone. That's not good new for Microsoft of course, so if you don't like Microsoft, then check out Linux.

Microsoft say “For the most enhanced, full-functioning Windows experience on small notebook PCs, however, consumers will want to go with Windows 7 Home Premium, which lets you get the most out of your digital media and easily connect with other PCs.” You can't have it clearer than that. From what I can see from the forums netbook owners who are using Windows 7 Home Premium are quite happy with it.

Menq EasyPC E790 Cheapest NetbookIt may not be one of the best netbooks you can buy but the new Menq netbook the EasyPC E790 is certainly the cheapest. At the moment it runs under Windows CE, but Menq will release an Android firmware update soon. He keeps calling it a laptop, but I would rather call it a netbook but it does seem to have some sort of word processor.

The EasyPC E790 has an ARM9 processor so it's not the fastest in the world in fact, it’s pretty slow, but that might change once Android has been installed.

They aren't available yet but if you are looking for cheap netbooks or even the cheapest netbook available then keep checking in a large supermarket chain near you, the Menq E790 should be with you soon!

Best Netbooks | Samsung NC20

Best Netbooks - Samsung NC20 12" Netbook

Is the Samsung NC20 12" Netbook a Good Buy?Samsung NC20 12

Netbooks used to have small screens - up to 10" - but there is now a move towards larger 12" screens. This is of course an improvement but it does cause problems as 12" netbooks are heavier, the battery life is shorter and they are also more expensive.

Samsung has earned itself a reputation for making some of the best netbooks on the market, although at times they are more expensive than the competition, The NC20 has a great keyboard and nice screen but the trackpad could be better.

The processor used in the NC20 is a VIA not an Atom but the performance is nearly identical. The 1280x800 screen resolution is OK as is the 5 hour battery life.

The NC20 does however have an excellent keyboard and screen. The price of less than $500 bucks is also good for a Samsung

The main selling point of the Samsung NC20 is the 1.3GHz Via Nano CPU it can run the same software as chips from Intel and Advanced Micro Devices.

The NC20 is the first netbook with a Via CPU but previous models form manufactuerrs such as HP have been disappointing. This new Nano is a great improvement, being designed specifically for small, low-power laptops.

Dimensions

Samsung NC20-21GBK Netbook
1.3GHz VIA Nano U2250, 1GB DDR2, 160GB HDD, Windows XP, 12.1" LCD - MPN: NPNC20KA02US

The Samsung NC20 is larger than the Dell Inspiron Mini 12—and the Lenovo ThinkPad X200. Its dimensions are 11.5 x 8.5 x 1.2 inches, the NC20 is also heavier than most netbooks at 3.4 pounds. It's too big for a purse but fits into a shoulder bag.

It has been given an Editor's Choice award at laptopmag who point out the slightly better performance than the current Intel Atom based netbooks. In the US the NC20 will cost about $100 more than the ASUS Eee PC 1000HE ($399), which is smaller but with a longer battery life. The NC20 is however easier to read due to its 12-inch screen, so if this is important to you, it is a good choice.

Best Netbooks for Kids for Christmas - Dell Mini Nickelodeon

Dell and Asus have both recently released netbooks aimed at kids, with no doubt one eye on Christmas sales. It is probable that they will both be awarded prizes for being the best netbooks for kids.Dell Mini Mickelodeon Netbook
Dell have taken a leaf out of Asus' netbook and have come up with a new Inspiron Nickelodeon Netbook which they are marketing to kids with the catch phrase "have the slime of your life". Whereas Asus have gone with the Disney Netpal and the Disney brand image of good wholesome family fun, Dell are appealing to that side of kids that likes all things disgusting and have made their netbook to look like it has slime on it ! Much to the amusement of many kids no doubt. A neat marketing ploy.

Dell and Nickelodeon have continued the slime theme inside the netbook as well. It's great fun for the kids as they get to make a mess but there is nothing to clean up afterwards.

The features of this Dell netbook include Nick media where kids can stream MP3 songs and see early screenings of Nick shows on the broadband media player. It can be also customized with iCarly and Spongebob Squarepants characters, and allows customization of games and the TV programs that can be watched from Nick.com. The netbook also features parental controls.

Whyville - where they delve into a virtual world where they can learn and play with other kids around the globe, via a customized avatar that takes them through a variety of educational and kid-friendly activities. Whyville has been approved by both parents and teachers.

The screen is 10.1" - slightly larger than the 8.9" of the Asus Netpal. The Mini Mickeloden has an internal 802.11b/g WiFi to keep your kids connected to their blog, instant messenger, video chat, and e-mail, it also has a 1.3MP webcam, 3 USB ports to connect to an external hard drive, digital cameras etc...

There is also the option of an external DVD drive to watch or burn CDs and DVDs, plus a a 160GB hard drive.

The keyboard is 92% the size of that of a standard laptop keyboard and has a multi-touch track pad. It is also is spDell Inspiron Mini Nickelodeon Netbookill-resistant.

Best Netbooks Asus 1005HA Netbook

Best Netbooks - Asus Netbook 1005HA PU1X

The Asus 1005HA netbook is one of the best netbooks on Amazon - it costs around $275 for the 6 cell and $330 for the 3 cell. It features the Intel Atom N280 1.66 GHz processor, i.e. the faster one.

The speakers are located closer to the front on the bottom so the quality is better than with previous Asus netbooks and other manufactures. It has 1 GB of pre-installed RAM like most other netbooks, this can be upgraded to 2 GB RAM but it is hardly worth the effort as the part that is more likely to cause a problem is the processor and graphics chipset (Intel GMA 950), although 2 GB RAM will make multitasking a bit easier. The Asus 1005HA is sold with an integrated 1.3 megapixel camera.

All in all if you are looking for a netbook that won't break the bank then the 1005HA does the job. If you what you need is something you can travel with then the 1005HA is ideal given its excellent battery life, they say ten hours but with everything on and working you will get around 8 hours. Re-charging will take between 2 and 3 hours. Asus continues to dominate the sales charts for a good reason !

Asus 1101HA New Netbook Computer

Best Netbooks - the Asus EEE PC 1101HA Netbook plus Video Review

The Asus 1101HA could be described as a top of the range netbook which features a bigger 11.6" high-resolution screen, an overclockable CPU and excellent battery life plus integrated webcam. If you want to see the video by the nice guy from Liliputing.com juAsus Eee PC 1101HA Netbook Computerst scroll down to the video !

It is however slightly slower and a bit more expensive than other netbook computers.

The Asus Eee PC 1101HA's design and battery life is impressive, but a faster Intel Atom CPU would be an improvement.

Asus 1101HA Specs
Processor: Intel Atom
RAM 1 GB DDR2 SDRAM
Hard drive 160 GB
Chipset Intel US15W chipset
Operating System Windows XP
Weight 3.0 lbs
Dimensions (WD) 11.3 x 7.7 inches
Price $429 in the USA (which in the UK is around £260 - which means that they may finally have stopped their old trick of just replacing the $ by a £)

Asus is the company that inadvertently created the marketing phenomenon that is the Netbook - for a brief history of how and why netbook computers were invented and wy they are not notebooks - see What are Netbook Computers

Now of course it has to improve the netbooks it has created, which are not cut-down notebooks even though it may seem that they are.

The latest idea is to increase the display size to 11.6" (although Microsoft says it is limiting Windows 7 to a screen size of 10.2" for netbooks).

This larger screen size is bringing netbooks back up to the bottom-end notebook experience minus the drives.

The 1101HA has the same slimline styling as the 10" 1005HA, although the resolution has been upgraded to 1,366x768. It uses the Z520 version of the Atom processor, instead of the faster and more widely used N270 and N280 CPUs.

This means that the 1101HA is slower but Asus lets you overclock it via the BIOS to get a 30% improvement.

The slim design and excellent use of space means it is very similar to 19" netbooks in size whist at the same time having a larger keyboard, with flat-topped keys.

The touch pad is good and has tiny bumps for gooàd feedback to your fingers. It only has one rocker bar however and would be better off with two.

The 1,366x768 resolution means the screen is less cluttered and better for larger Web pages or long office documents.

Asus batteries have always been good and the 1101HA will operate for 8 hours 50 minutes (very good) in video battery drain tests, which is excellent news if you want to watch videos or carry out other tasks that require a lot of power.

You get a standard one-year parts-and-labor warranty with all Asus laptops.

Asus Eee PC 1101HA Netbook

Netbooks - Asus Eee PC 1101HA Netbook in US Stores

asus eee pc 11-1HA netbook The Asus Eee PC 1101HA is finally available in US stores. The 11.6 inch netbook features a 1.33GHz Intel Atom Z520 CPU, 1GB of RAM, a 1366 x 768 pixel glossy display, a 160GB hard drive, and operates via Windows XP. It also has a 1.3MP webcam, Bluetooth 2.1, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, and a 6 cell, 62Whr battery.

The Eee PC 1101HA is a larger version of the Eee PC 1008HA,with the same “seashell” case, a textured touchpad and similar coloring. The Atom Z520 processor and Intel GMA 500 graphics are a bit disappointing. The Eee PC T91, with its 1024 x600 pixel display is a bit slow with these specifications. They won't be any better on a higher resolution display.

The Eee PC 1101HA can however be overclocked to run at 32% higher than its normal clock speed.

The Eee PC 1101HA costs $429.99 at Newegg and $429 from BuyDig.

Why God Invented Netbooks

Netbooks - The First Netbooks

Who invented the netbook?
Mary Lou Jepsen. The first netbook was launched in 2007 by Asustek , they named it the Eee PC and 350,000 units were made. To everyone's surprise they sold out in a few months. The first netbooks were designed as a result of the "One laptop per child" initiative, largely based on the ideas of Mary Lou Jepsen, but the Eee Pcs were not bought by the people in poor countries for whom they were originally intended but by middle-class buyers in the West, who were looking for a second laptop computer they could carry with them and use for checking their email, YouTube or Facebook while they were on the move. The success of the Eee PC fnetbook orced major manufacturers such as Dell, HP, and Lenovo to take note. By autumn 2008, nearly every US notebook manufacturer had launched their $400 netbook.

The design of the netbook revealed that PC users didn't want laptops that did more and more, they wanted computers that did less and were cheaper.
(Asus Eee PC 1000HA Netbook)
Asus Eee PC 1000HA NetbookBy the time 2008 was over, Asustek, which now makes some of the best netbooks under the name Asus, had sold over 5 million netbooks, and sales by other brands amounted to 10 million. One strange phenomenon is that Europe appears to have fallen in love with netbooks - sales are 8 times those in the US. In just one year, netbooks had rocketed to become 7% of the global notebook market. In 2009 it is expected to be 12%.

Netbooks are the answer to what we actually do with our computers. People often buy the fastest most powerful computer available just in case, but in reality most people do very simple tasks on their computers, such as checking their email and surfing the net. Netbooks turned out to be the perfect solution.

Strangely enough netbooks have actually turned back the clock, whilst at the same time convincing people that they are the latest trendy thing. Netbooks perform like notebooks did 5 years ago, but it turns out that that is good enough.

Asustek realized that most people do a small range of things online over and over again and they could therefore produce a machine that would do those things for less than $300, but their netbooks are more or less useless when you are not online. They more or less force you to buy into the vaporous dream of cloud computing, because there's no storage space on your netbook.

When Asustek released their Eee netbook, the major companies like DellDell Inspiron Netbook, HP, and Apple didn't react Lillian Lin of Asustek said "All the other brands were thinking, 'Oh, this is crap,'"

Why would Dell and HP want to sell a netbook for $400 when they were doing very well selling notebooks for $1,000? For Asustek and MSI things were different, they had no established PC business so they had nothing to lose.
(Dell Inspiron Netbook)
Netbooks are the classic example of an upstart upsetting the apple cart.

To get around the problem of not being able to use Photoshop on a netbook there are things like Fotoflexer online, a web-based editing application that is a good enough replacement for Photoshop.

Netbooks are now so cheap that companies like Vodafone and RadioShack are giving them away to people who sign up for their services.

Another strange netbook phenomenon is that they are so cheap that the makers barely make a profit on them. Paul Goldenberg, MD of Digital Gadgets says "The profit margins on these things are nonexistent. Everyone is saying 'We're losing money now, but we'll make it up on volume, right?'"

Netbooks have set the cat amongst the pigeons in more than one way. Microsoft had planned to stop selling Windows XP so that customers would have to buy the more lucrative Vista OS, but when Linux started to be installed in netbooks, Microsoft had to quickly change tack and extend the life of XP for another 2 years.

Microsof t say is making "good money" on netbooks but they charge only $15 for XP on netbooks, but plans to ensure that Windows 7 will run on netbooks — Vista is not good on netbooks. If you get Windows 7 make sure you choose Windows 7 Home Premium, the 'starter' version is not much good.

Intel is selling millions of Atom chips to netbook makers and says "We see this as our next billion-dollar market," even though they make only a fraction of what they make on a Celeron or Pentium in a laptop.

The great fear is that cheap netbooks are so good, people will not want to spend $1,000 for a laptop.

Times they are a changing however in laptop world and netbooks are set to take off in the USA like they have in Europe. But the next major market will be the BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, China dn India) where there are billions of people who don't have any sort of computer yet amd for whom price is a major consideration.

Netbooks could in fact lead to even cheaper computers, that don't even need a motherboard. Mary Lou Jepsen says "if you want the batteries to last why not just make a screen and a really cheap $2 to $5 radio chip?" This seems to be the way things are going, everything, including games will be done online and people will look for the smallest computer they can get.

Choosing a Netbook or Notebook

Netbooks or Notebooks ?

Should I buy a netbook or a notebook /Netbook Notebook Difference laptop?

Want to buy a netbook or a notebook? It is important to understand that a netbook is not a small notebook and far less a small desktop computer. Netbooks and notebooks are totally different animals, so which one you should buy depends on what you want to do.

What are the differences between a netbook and a notebook ?

First - netbooks are a lot smaller. A netbook screen goes from 7 to 10 inches - a notebook screen starts at 12.1 inches and can go as high as 21 inches.

Second - netbooks have less storage space, generally 4GB or up to 64GB - notebooks go from 80GB to 320 GB

Third - netbooks are not portable computers you can use for watching movies or videos or for playing games or using photoshop, Word or Excel - netbooks are designed for netcentric computing - i.e. stuff you do on the net that doesn't require much power, surfing, reading and checking your email

Fourth - the processor in a netbook is generally an Intel Atom that runs at 1.6 GHz, it is not fast but it does the basics

Fifth - netbooks do not have DVD drives or CD drives, notebooks do.

Sixth - price, netbooks cost around $300 - $500, laptops start at around $600

Seventh - batteries, netbook batteries last longer i.e. 6 - 10 hours on 1 charge due to their ultralow voltage processors and everything being efficient, a netbook runs cool so it doesn't need large fans. Batteries on notebooks only last on average between 2 and 4 hours

So there you have it, if you want a proper computer go for a notebook, but if you want something small, light and highly portable to let you check your email, twitter and chat while you are on the move, without the need for a recharger in your pocket, then go for a netbook !

Check out my new best mate Albert for a good descriptive video of the differences

Which is Best Netbook Computer?

Netbooks - Which is the Best Netbook?

Asus has the best netbooks

Netbook Asus EeePC 1000HE

Are you looking for the best Netbook? Then good luck ! There are dozens, if not hundreds to choose from. At the Asus site alone they have around 30 netbooks to choose from. So I will make your life easier. According to PC Mag and PC World the best netbook is the Asus EeePC 1000HE.

Why is it the best? Because it features the first Intel Atom N280 processor a six-cell battery, and a new keyboard, but above all because it is not expensive !

The Asus EeePC 1000HE looks like most other glossy netbooks. It comes in blue or black, like the MSI Wind, Acer Aspire One (10-inch), and Samsung NC10-14GB.

It is heavier than the Aspire One, the MSI Wind, and the NC10-14GB by about 5 ounces.

It also has extended battery life - a vast improvement on the EeePC 1000H.

The mouse buttons have been placed below the touchpad instead of either side of it unlike the HP Mini 2140 and are a lot larger than those of the MSI WInd and the Aspire One.

Netbook Asus EeePC 1000HEThe "gesture-based touchpad" is a first for a netbook. You can scroll up and down using two fingers and right-click with 3 fingers.

The screen is a a 10-inch LED with a resolution of 1,024 x 600. The keyboard has completely redesigned from the 1000H's, it is around 92% of full size, the same as those on the HP2140 and the NC10-14GB.

It has 3 USB ports, VGA-0ut, a webcam, an Ethernet port, a 4-in-1 card reader, and 802.11n Wi-Fi—standard netbook features. The only real advance compared to other netbooks is built-in Bluetooth.

It is the first netbook with the 1.66-GHz Intel Atom N280 processor.

ASUS has included an overclocking feature, the same as the EeePC 1002HA you can choose between Super Performance, Auto, High Performance, and Power Saving mode via an application key above the keyboard.

The real advantage of the N280 processor is it takes up less space on the motherboard and thus allows the netbook to be slimmer. The 63-Wh battery rating of the 1000HE is higher than the 58-Wh of the Samsung NC10-14GB and the 48-Wh rating of the Dell Mini 12.

Along with all this the Asus EeePC 1000 HE netbook is sold at a reasonable price - around $389.

Netbooks Information and Tips

Netbooks - What is a Netbook?

Dell Inspiron Mini 9 Netbook
The word 'netbook' is a word created from 'Internet' and 'Notebook' and refers to a type of portable computer that is smaller than an ordinary notebook and is designed for wireless access to the Internet.

(Dell Inspiron Mini 9 Netbook)

Netbooks are mainly used browsing the web and e-mailing and they rely to a large extent on the Internet to provide remote access to web-based applications. They are designed more and more for so-called 'cloud computing' i.e. computing which requires less powerful computers.

At this moment in time netbooks generally run under either Windows XP or Linux and are not suited to bloatware such as Windows Vista (but then, what is?)

Netbooks currently range in size from under 5 inches to over 13 inches, although it is not clear is size matters here either. They usually weigh between 2 and 3 pounds (around 1 to 1.5 kg) and are generally a lot cheaper than normal laptops and notebooks. Although, as with everything in computing, prices are constantly changing.

In early 2009, the definition of a netbook was a "notebook computer with a low-powered x86-compatible processor", a small screen (under 10 inches), a small keyboard, wireless connectivity, and weighing less than 3 pounds 1.3 kg). Netbooks also have no optical disk drive.

Samsung NC20 Netbook

(Samsung NC20 Netbook)

Netbooks make use of online applications and services, thus obviating the requirement for powerful hardware on the netbook itself. Hardisks and optical disc drives are often the first devices to be dumped in order to make the netbook smaller. Netbooks therefore rely on solid-state storage devices with no moving parts, which use less power and are lighter whilst at the same time being more robust and hard-wearing. Application software is usually downloaded from the Internet or uploaed for USB drive. You can also add an external IDE drive with a USB-to-IDE converter if you so desire.

All netbooks support Wi-Fi wireless networking and many of them can be used on cellphone networks with data capability.
